Good to know: Charter Labuan Bajo is operated by Komodo Luxury, a real award-winning Indonesian liveaboard operator (TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice 2022–2025, founded 2015, part of Juara Holding Group Limited). We charter the whole vessel privately for your group. Komodo National Park (UNESCO 1991) requires park entry fees/permits — general information, verify current rates. Dive-site conditions and seasons are indicative and vary; Komodo currents are strong and many north sites are advanced. Marine life — mantas, hammerheads — is seasonal and wild, and can never be guaranteed. Prices are indicative ranges, by quote, and vary by vessel, cabins, season, trip length and group size. Enquiries and booking via WhatsApp +62 811-3823-875 and sales@komodoluxury.com.
The best Komodo dive sites charter guests ask about are the high-current pinnacles, manta cleaning stations and colorful reefs scattered across Komodo National Park. On a private boat or yacht charter, the “best” sites are the ones that match your experience level, the season, and the day’s tides — not just the famous names.
As Wayan, PADI Dive Guide & Skipper at Charter Labuan Bajo by Komodo Luxury, I’ll walk you through how we actually choose dive sites on charter: by conditions, certification, and safety first. This guide focuses on the best Komodo dive sites by charter boat, what each site is really like, and how to build a safe, memorable route with your own private phinisi or yacht.
Operated by Komodo Luxury (founded 2015 under Juara Holding Group Limited), Charter Labuan Bajo focuses on private charters aboard our own fleet — including the Komodo Signature and Komodo Prestige luxury phinisi — plus selected partner vessels. Komodo National Park itself was established in 1980 and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991, so both conservation rules and dive practices are strict for good reasons.
How We Define “Best Komodo Dive Sites” on a Charter
On a private charter, the best Komodo dive sites are those that balance:
- Your dive certification and experience
- Sea conditions on the day (tides, currents, wind)
- Seasonal highlights (manta, sharks, visibility)
- The route and duration of your trip
Komodo is famous for strong currents, downcurrents and thermoclines. Many of the top Komodo dive sites by boat are advanced. A good charter itinerary won’t promise you every famous name; instead, we select a safe mix of sites in the north, central and south according to the actual conditions we see as we sail.
Wildlife — especially manta rays and hammerheads — is always seasonal and never guaranteed. We can time your charter to maximize chances, but no one can honestly promise sightings.
Overview: Komodo Regions & What They Offer
To understand the best Komodo charter diving spots, it helps to think in three zones:
- North Komodo – Generally warmer, clearer, stronger currents. Great for fishy drifts and advanced sites.
- Central Komodo – Classic Komodo: moderate to strong currents, colorful reefs, and the famous manta sites. Core area for most charters.
- South Komodo / South Rinca – Cooler water, lower visibility at times, rich nutrients, seasonal manta and shark action, healthy soft corals.
Below is a simplified comparison of key areas and representative dive sites we commonly include on private charters. All depths and levels are indicative ranges only — we always brief exact plans on the day.
| Area | Example Sites | Indicative Depth Range | Typical Level | Main Highlights | Common Season Focus |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| North Komodo | Castle Rock, Crystal Rock, Cauldron (Shotgun) | 5–30 m+ (multi-level) * | Advanced (strong currents) | Schooling fish, sharks, pelagics, fast drifts | Generally best Dec–Apr for calmer surface, varies yearly |
| Central Komodo | Batu Bolong, Mawan, Siaba Besar, Sebayur | 5–25 m * | Beginner–Advanced (site specific) | Colorful reefs, turtles, macro, mantas in season | Year-round with variable visibility |
| South Komodo / Rinca | Manta Alley, Cannibal Rock (region), Secret Garden (region) | 5–30 m * | Intermediate–Advanced | Cooler water, nutrient-rich, mantas in season, rich invertebrates | Often better for mantas Jul–Sept, varies yearly |
*Depths are indicative training/guiding ranges, not maximum site depths. Final profiles follow your certification, experience, and conditions on the day.
Central Komodo: Core Sites for Most Charters
Most of our private trips include 1–3 days in central Komodo, because it offers a broad mix: colorful reefs, manta cleaning stations (seasonal), plus easier training sites.
Batu Bolong – Spectacular, But Advanced
Batu Bolong is one of the top Komodo dive sites by boat, a steep coral-covered pinnacle rising from deep water. The reef life is extremely rich: hard and soft corals, anthias clouds, reef sharks, turtles, and schooling fish.
- Level: Advanced only
- Currents: Can be very strong and unpredictable; downcurrents possible
- Depth: Usually dived as a multi-level dive in the 10–25 m range within your limits
- Access by charter: Best done from a stable dive tender/boat with an experienced guide and skipper watching the water closely
On charter, we only include Batu Bolong when conditions, tides and your experience align. It’s never an “automatic” site; we check timing carefully and always brief escape and reference points.
Mawan & Makassar Reef – Manta Cleaning & Feeding (Seasonal)
Mawan and the broader Makassar Reef area are manta ray hotspots in Komodo National Park, used as cleaning and feeding stations. They can offer long manta encounters — or none at all — depending on plankton and currents.
- Level: Intermediate (comfortable with current and negative entries in some conditions)
- Currents: From gentle to strong; often drift-dived
- Wildlife: Manta rays in season, turtles, sometimes eagle rays, schooling fish, macro along the rubble/sand
- Best by charter: We can return on multiple dives if the action is good, adjusting timing with the tides
Mantas are wild and highly seasonal. Typically, you have higher chances at certain times of year (often during plankton blooms) but sightings are never guaranteed. Expect a chance, not a promise.
Siaba Besar – Calm Bay & Training Ground
Siaba Besar is known as a calmer bay with sandy patches, coral heads and turtles. It’s ideal for:
- Check dives on day one
- Refresher dives
-
Less experienced divers in a mixed group
-
Level: Open Water and up (good for beginners under supervision)
- Currents: Usually mild to moderate inside the bay, but always checked from the boat before entry
- Highlights: Turtles, macro (nudibranchs, shrimps), coral gardens
On a mixed-ability charter, Siaba Besar can host easier dives while advanced divers head to more challenging sites nearby on the same day.
Sebayur Area – Easy Reefs & Night Dives
Around Sebayur Kecil and Sebayur Besar you’ll find fringing reefs, sloping coral gardens and patch reefs.
- Level: Open Water and up
- Currents: Generally mild to moderate, depending on tide state
- Highlights: Reef fish, occasional rays, night diving with crustaceans and cephalopods
For charters that embark or end around this area, Sebayur is convenient for a gentle first or last dive, or a relaxed night dive.
North Komodo: High-Energy Advanced Sites
If your group is Advanced Open Water or higher with experience in current, the north often provides the most intense dives of the trip. Many guests call these the best Komodo dive sites on a charter once they’ve felt the flow.
Castle Rock – Fish Action in the Current
Castle Rock is a submerged seamount lying in open water. The top comes up shallower, with the saddle and “up-current” side frequently full of life.
- Level: Advanced, with good buoyancy and comfort in strong current
- Currents: Strong, often requiring negative entry and quick descent to shelter zones
- Highlights: Schooling trevally, fusiliers, snapper, reef sharks, occasionally GTs and other pelagics
On private charters, we time Castle Rock carefully to hit the best current window: strong enough for action, not extreme. If tides are wrong or your group isn’t ready, we swap to alternatives.
Crystal Rock – Colorful & Current-Swept
Close to Castle Rock, Crystal Rock has impressive coral coverage and similar pelagic potential, but with more exposed ridges and small plateaus.
- Level: Advanced
- Currents: Strong, with potential downcurrents and washing-machine effects on big tides
- Highlights: Hard and soft corals, sharks, schooling fish, macro in calmer corners
We usually combine Castle Rock and Crystal Rock on the same day if conditions cooperate. Surface conditions can also be choppy; we discuss this at the briefing so guests know what to expect.
The Cauldron / Shotgun – High-Speed Drift
The Cauldron (also called “Shotgun”) is a channel dive through a narrow passage between islands. On the right tide, you ride fast-moving water that “shoots” you through.
- Level: Advanced, excellent control in current required
- Currents: Very strong, including acceleration zones and turbulence
- Highlights: Fast drifts, big fish, sometimes mantas or sharks, dramatic topography
As a skipper, this is a site I will always check personally from the surface before we commit. On a charter, we’d only include the Cauldron if the entire diving group is genuinely ready, both in certification and in actual current experience — not just “Advanced” on paper.
South Komodo & Rinca: Cooler Water, Rich Nutrients
South-facing sites get cooler, nutrient-rich water. Visibility can be lower than in the north, but life can be very dense — soft corals, invertebrates, and, seasonally, manta rays and sharks.
Manta Alley – Southern Manta Hotspot (Seasonal)
Manta Alley is a well-known manta ray aggregation area in the south. It can be magical on the right day.
- Level: Intermediate–Advanced
- Currents: Variable; surge and bumpy surface conditions are common
- Highlights: Manta cleaning and feeding in season, rich marine life, cooler water
Water temperatures here can drop significantly compared to central Komodo. A 5 mm wetsuit (sometimes plus hooded vest) is a good idea if you chill easily. Again, manta presence is seasonal and never guaranteed.
Cannibal Rock Region & Southern Reefs
While site names and exact choices depend on conditions, the southern reefs around Rinca and nearby islands offer:
- Soft coral gardens
- Dense invertebrate life (sea apples, tunicates, nudibranchs)
-
Occasional sharks and rays
-
Level: Intermediate–Advanced depending on site
- Visibility: Often lower than north/central, but rich in nutrients
- Appeal: Great for photographers and divers who appreciate biodiversity over just “blue water”
Matching Dive Sites to Your Certification & Trip Length
The best Komodo dive sites on a charter change completely depending on how long you have and who is on board. Below is a simple overview of how trip length and guest profile shape a typical plan.
- 2–3 Days Private Charter
- Core central Komodo only: easier reefs (Siaba, Sebayur), one or two manta-focused sites if season and tides allow. Ideal for Open Water divers, families, or as an introduction.
- 4–5 Days Private Charter
- Mix of central Komodo plus selected advanced sites in the north or a dip into the south, depending on season. Good for Advanced Open Water groups wanting variety.
- 6–7+ Days Private Charter
- Full loop potential: north, central and south, with flexibility to repeat favorite sites or chase conditions (e.g. multiple manta days or sharkier northern drifts).
- Open Water (Beginner) Divers
- Focus on sites with manageable currents and clear shelter zones. Central Komodo highlights, plus easy north/south options if the sea cooperates.
- Advanced + Significant Current Experience
- Our team can include more of the high-energy pinnacles and passes: Castle Rock, Crystal Rock, Cauldron/Shotgun, Batu Bolong under the right tide.
For mixed groups (for example, one experienced couple and two beginners), we often split dives by level or choose sites that have both gentle and more exposed sections. Private charter gives us more freedom to adapt in real time.
If you’d like help matching your group’s levels with a realistic route, you can plan your trip with our team or message us on WhatsApp at +62 811-3823-875 for direct advice.
Seasons, Currents & Visibility in Komodo
Komodo is diveable year-round, but each season influences where we recommend going.
General Seasonal Patterns (Indicative)
- Approx. April–November (drier, SE trade winds):
- Popular for north and central sites
- Often good visibility in the north
-
Some southern sites can be more exposed to wind and swell
-
Approx. December–March (wetter, calmer seas in the north):
- Often smoother surface conditions in the north
- Good time for advanced northern sites like Castle/Crystal Rock
- Some central/southern areas can have variable visibility
Manta activity and hammerhead encounters relate to plankton, water temperature and currents, which vary year to year. Southern manta sites like Manta Alley often see peaks during cooler, nutrient-rich periods, while central sites like Mawan/Makassar can have manta sightings at various points across the year.
Hammerhead sharks have been reported in deeper, more remote areas of Komodo, but these are specialized, advanced dives and sightings are never guaranteed. We do not present hammerhead encounters as a “standard” Komodo experience.
Currents in Komodo are driven by the Indonesian Throughflow, squeezed between islands and underwater ridges. Expect:
- Tidal exchanges with very strong currents at certain times
- Downcurrents and upwellings at exposed pinnacles
- Fast drifts through channels on spring tides
On charter, we plan entries around tide tables, local knowledge and real-time observation. Even so, you must be confident in basic current techniques: negative entries (when briefed), staying close to the reef when needed, and knowing what to do if separated. Safety sausages (SMBs) are mandatory.
Safety & Experience: How We Run Diving on Charter
Komodo is not a place to push limits. At Charter Labuan Bajo, operated by Komodo Luxury, we approach diving conservatively:
- We require proof of certification and recent experience for advanced sites.
- We may suggest a check dive in calmer water, even for experienced divers, to see buoyancy and comfort level.
- Dive plans stay within recreational no-decompression limits, with gas reserves and turn-pressures enforced.
- If currents are stronger than forecast or the group looks tired, we change the site. No famous spot is worth an unsafe dive.
Our parent company, Komodo Luxury, has been operating in Komodo since 2015 and has received TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards from 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. That experience shows in the way we brief, choose sites, and coordinate from bridge to dive deck.

Indicative Price Ranges (Last Verified June 2026)
Pricing depends on:
- Vessel (size, cabin type, luxury level)
- Season and exact dates
- Trip length and number of guests
- Diving intensity (number of dives, equipment needs, guides)
As a very rough guide, private Komodo liveaboard or phinisi charters typically start around mid-range budgets for simpler boats and move into the premium and luxury bracket for vessels like Komodo Signature and Komodo Prestige. For exact quotes, we build each charter individually after understanding your group and goals.
To get current rates tailored to your dates, please email sales@komodoluxury.com or plan your trip and we’ll follow up, including via WhatsApp at +62 811-3823-875 if you prefer.
Komodo National Park Fees & Permits
Komodo National Park (established 1980, UNESCO-listed 1991) charges park and activity fees that vary by:
- Nationality (Indonesian vs foreign)
- Day of the week (weekday vs weekend/holiday)
- Activities (diving, trekking, camera fees, etc.)
As of our last verification in June 2026, parks fees are subject to change and are often adjusted by local authorities. On private charters we typically:
- Either include fees as a line item in your charter quote, or
- Explain the estimated daily range and settle according to actual usage
Because policies and amounts change, always treat any numbers as indicative only and check with our team for the latest when you book.
Building Your Own “Best Of Komodo” Charter Route
On a private charter, you aren’t locked to a fixed liveaboard schedule. That flexibility is a big advantage for serious divers.
Here’s how we normally design a “best of Komodo dive sites charter” route:
-
Profile your group
• Certifications, logged dives, last dive date
• Comfort in current and deeper water
• Non-divers and snorkelers on board
-
Choose trip length & season
• Shorter trip: focus on central Komodo
• Longer trip: add north and/or south depending on month and wind
-
Prioritize must-do experiences, not just site names
• “High-current fish action day” (Castle / Crystal, Cauldron)
• “Manta focus day” (Mawan/Makassar or southern manta sites, depending on season)
• “Colorful reef & easy macro day” (Siaba, Sebayur, sheltered bays)
-
Keep flexibility
• We often keep 1–2 days “open” to repeat your favorite site or chase better conditions discovered during the trip.
-
Balance diving with surface activities
• Rinca or Komodo dragon treks
• Padar viewpoint hikes
• Sandbanks and quiet bays for paddleboarding or kayaking
For an example of how a multi-day charter flows and how many dives per day are realistic, talk to our reservations team via sales@komodoluxury.com or plan your trip. We can sketch out a sample day-by-day route over WhatsApp if that’s easier as you plan.
FAQs
Do I need to be Advanced Open Water to dive Komodo on a charter?
No, Open Water divers can enjoy many central Komodo sites with manageable currents under guide supervision. However, the more famous high-current sites in the north and Batu Bolong are generally reserved for Advanced Open Water (or equivalent) divers with real current experience. On charter, we tailor site choice to the lowest reasonable level in the group and may split groups by experience where safe and practical.
Can you guarantee manta rays or hammerheads on a Komodo charter?
No, we can never guarantee wildlife. Manta rays and hammerheads are wild and seasonal, with presence depending on plankton, temperature and currents that change year to year. We do plan your route and timing to maximize chances for the species you care about, but honest operators will always say sightings are not guaranteed.
How many dives per day are typical on a private Komodo charter?
Most dive-focused charters plan for 2–3 dives per full day, plus optional night dives on some evenings, depending on your energy and the route. On arrival and departure days, expect fewer dives due to transfers and safety margins. Exact schedules are customized to your group and vessel.
Is Komodo safe for beginners on a private charter?
Komodo can be safe for beginners if the itinerary is designed carefully: easier sites, conservative dive plans, and honest communication about limits. What is not safe is pushing beginners into advanced current sites just to tick famous names. On our charters, safety and comfort come first; we select suitable sites and may skip high-energy pinnacles for less experienced groups.
How far in advance should I book a Komodo dive charter?
For peak periods and premium vessels like Komodo Signature and Komodo Prestige, booking several months in advance is strongly recommended, especially for full-boat private charters. Shoulder seasons may offer more flexibility. Contact us via sales@komodoluxury.com or WhatsApp +62 811-3823-875 as early as you can so we can align the best boat, route and dates for your group.
