Komodo Charter Dive Sites: What You’ll Dive

Komodo Charter Dive Sites: What You’ll Dive

Good to know: Charter Labuan Bajo is operated by Komodo Luxury, a real award-winning Indonesian liveaboard operator (TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice 2022–2025, founded 2015, part of Juara Holding Group Limited). We charter the whole vessel privately for your group. Komodo National Park (UNESCO 1991) requires park entry fees/permits — general information, verify current rates. Dive-site conditions and seasons are indicative and vary; Komodo currents are strong and many north sites are advanced. Marine life — mantas, hammerheads — is seasonal and wild, and can never be guaranteed. Prices are indicative ranges, by quote, and vary by vessel, cabins, season, trip length and group size. Enquiries and booking via WhatsApp +62 811-3823-875 and sales@komodoluxury.com.

Komodo charter dive sites are the specific dive locations you reach by private boat or yacht charter inside Komodo National Park. On this page I’ll walk you through the main sites we can include on a private charter, how we plan them by trip length, certification level, seasons and currents.

As Wayan Sutrisna, PADI Dive Guide & Skipper with Charter Labuan Bajo by Komodo Luxury, my job is to keep this honest and practical. Komodo can deliver some of the richest dives in Indonesia — but many sites are advanced, currents are real, and mantas or hammerheads are never guaranteed.

Our role at Charter Labuan Bajo is to match you with the right private phinisi, yacht or boat from Komodo Luxury’s owned fleet, then build a dive plan around your group, not the other way around.

Who We Are: Charter Labuan Bajo & Komodo Luxury

Charter Labuan Bajo (charterlabuanbajo.com) is the Komodo boat and yacht charter hub based in Labuan Bajo, Flores. We organise private charters by vessel and by trip — from compact private boats to multi-cabin phinisi yachts — all departing Labuan Bajo into Komodo National Park.

We operate in partnership with Komodo Luxury, a real Indonesian liveaboard operator:

  • Founded in 2015
  • Licensed Indonesian travel operator (KBLI 79120), based in Denpasar, Bali
  • Part of Juara Holding Group Limited
  • TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Award: 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025
  • Owns and operates two luxury phinisi liveaboards: Komodo Signature and Komodo Prestige

Through Charter Labuan Bajo, you can privately charter these vessels — or other suitable boats we represent — for your own group. You decide the pace; we build the route and dive plan around you, subject to safety, park rules and conditions.

We also operate sister sites for those comparing options:

  • liveaboardlabuanbajo.com
  • labuanbajodivecruise.com
  • privatekomodocruise.com

For detailed charter planning you can plan your trip with our team or reach us on WhatsApp: +62 811-3823-875, email: sales@komodoluxury.com.

Komodo National Park: The Environment You’ll Be Diving

Komodo National Park was established in 1980, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991 and sits inside the Coral Triangle — one of the most biodiverse marine regions on earth. It includes Komodo, Rinca, Padar and many smaller islands.

A few realities shape every Komodo dive charter:

  • Currents: This is a meeting point of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Tidal flows through the straits can be very strong. Many of the most famous northern sites are advanced due to current.
  • Seasons (general pattern):
  • April–November: Typically drier, with more consistent conditions for charters. North and central often clearer and warmer.
  • December–March: More rain and swell at times. Southern sites can have stronger winds and reduced visibility, but conditions can also be excellent on some days.
  • Water temperature & visibility:
  • North/Central: often warmer and clearer
  • South: can be cooler with lower visibility but very rich in life and colours

Dive-site conditions are indicative and vary day to day. Komodo rewards divers who respect the sea and stay flexible with the plan.

Key Komodo Charter Dive Sites: Overview Table

Below are the main komodo charter dive sites we most often plan into private routes, especially for 3–6 day trips. Depths and seasons are given in broad ranges and are not exact; every dive is planned on the day according to conditions and your certification.

Site Area Depth (approx.) Level Highlights Best Season (indicative)
Batu Bolong North/Central Shallow reef to deeper wall Advanced (strong currents) Rich coral slope, high fish density, occasional pelagics Generally April–November; year-round if conditions allow
Castle Rock North Mid-depth reef to deeper pinnacles Advanced (current-swept) Current-fed seamount, schooling fish, reef sharks Often best April–November with good visibility
Crystal Rock North Shallow top to deeper slopes Advanced (multi-directional currents) Coral-covered pinnacle, fish action, occasional pelagics Often best April–November; can be dived outside this if safe
Manta Alley South Reef & cleaning stations from shallow downwards Intermediate–Advanced (surge & current) Seasonal manta cleaning and feeding, rich benthic life Often stronger manta presence in certain months; variable by year
Cannibal Rock South Shallow top to deeper slopes Intermediate–Advanced (can be current-affected) Soft corals, critters, dense reef life Typically better during drier part of the year; variable
Tatawa (Tatawa Besar/area) Central Gentle slopes & drifts Open Water+ with good drift control Drift over coral gardens, turtles, schooling reef fish Generally April–November with good visibility
Manta Point / Mawan Central Mostly shallow Open Water+ (can have current) Seasonal mantas, sandy patches, coral bommies Manta activity varies by year; often productive in drier months
Siaba (Siaba Besar/area) Central Shallow bay & reef Beginner–Open Water Calmer site; turtles, macro, training & check dives Year-round, often protected

Again: these are guidelines, not promises. Komodo currents and weather can change the plan even on the same day.

North, Central & South: How Komodo Areas Differ

Understanding the park’s broad zones helps you choose the right komodo dive sites charter and trip length.

North Komodo: Big Currents, Big Fish

Typical targets on an advanced charter in the north include Batu Bolong, Castle Rock and Crystal Rock.

General character:

  • Currents: Often strong, sometimes unpredictable. Downcurrents and washing-machine effects can occur on the edges of the sites.
  • Suitability:
  • Confident Advanced Open Water (or equivalent) minimum
  • Comfortable with negative entries, quick descents, blue water safety stops
  • Good gas management and buoyancy in current
  • Wildlife:
  • High fish biomass: jacks, fusiliers, snappers, sometimes schools of barracuda
  • Reef sharks often present
  • Occasional visits by larger pelagics

This area can deliver some of the most intense action in Komodo, but it is not for inexperienced or rusty divers. On private charters, we only bring divers here when the group’s overall level, the tide and the forecast all align.

Central Komodo: Classic Charter Route

The central region around Komodo, Rinca and the smaller islands is the backbone of many private charters — especially 3 day / 2 night and 4 day / 3 night itineraries.

Key sites in central Komodo:

  • Tatawa area: Soft drifts, coral gardens, turtles
  • Manta Point / Mawan: Sandy bottom and bommies that can attract mantas
  • Siaba: Protected bay; ideal for check dives, relaxed macro, turtle encounters

Typical traits:

  • Currents: Still present, sometimes strong, but we can usually find an entry point and timing that works for Open Water and above with experience.
  • Flexibility: Great region for mixed-experience groups and families. We can split groups by level from the tender and choose milder or stronger parts of the reef.
  • Snorkelling: Many of these sites also suit snorkellers from the yacht when conditions are calm.

For many guests, central Komodo alone already feels like a complete charter experience: dragons on land, reefs, turtles, seasonal mantas, pink beaches and dramatic island views.

South Komodo: Cooler Water, Rich Colours & Seasonality

Southern sites such as Manta Alley and Cannibal Rock lie further from Labuan Bajo and require more sailing time. They are best targeted on longer private charters.

Characteristics:

  • Water: Cooler and often more nutrient-rich than the north or central zones.
  • Visibility: Can be lower but the reef life and soft corals can be exceptional on good days.
  • Conditions: Subject to swell, wind and surge; access is more weather-dependent.
  • Wildlife:
  • Manta Alley can have strong seasonal manta cleaning and feeding activity. This shifts year to year; we never promise exact months.
  • Cannibal Rock is known for rich soft corals, invertebrates and macro life.

To reach south Komodo properly by charter, I recommend 5 days / 4 nights or more, to allow for weather flexibility and unhurried sailing.

Which Komodo Charter Dive Sites Fit Your Trip Length?

On a charter, time is your currency. The farther we go from Labuan Bajo, the more we must sail at night or dedicate full days to transit.

Here’s an indicative guide to what’s realistic by trip length, assuming average conditions and an early departure from Labuan Bajo.

2D1N (2 days / 1 night)
Focus on central Komodo. Typically includes a few dives around Siaba and nearby reefs, maybe a manta-focused stop in the central area if conditions and timing line up. North and south are usually out of reach.
3D2N
The classic short charter. Central Komodo covered well; we can often add a taste of the northern or further central channels if the group level allows. South is typically still too far for quality time.
4D3N
Enough time for a solid central route plus at least a day on more advanced sites in the north, provided the group has sufficient experience and conditions cooperate. South remains a big push.
5D4N and longer
Gives us true range: a balanced mix of north, central and (weather-permitting) south. Ideal if you’re an experienced dive group aiming to include Batu Bolong, Castle Rock, Crystal Rock and a run towards Manta Alley or Cannibal Rock.

These ranges are flexible and may change with tides, seasons and your preferences. On a private phinisi or yacht, we usually review the plan each evening and can adjust based on how the group feels and what the sea is doing.

If you’d like help matching an itinerary to your experience level, contact us to plan your trip or message WhatsApp +62 811-3823-875 for sample routes and timing.

Dive Levels, Certification & Safety in Komodo

Komodo rewards solid skills and honest self-assessment. On a private charter I will always ask detailed questions about your diving before we fix an itinerary.

Recommended Minimum Certifications

As a general guide:

  • Central sites (Siaba, Tatawa, many parts of Manta Point/Mawan):
  • Minimum: Open Water Diver (or equivalent)
  • Ideal: Advanced Open Water with some drift experience

  • Northern advanced sites (Batu Bolong, Castle Rock, Crystal Rock):

  • Minimum: Advanced Open Water
  • Strongly preferred: 30–50+ logged dives, comfortable in current, recent diving (within a year)

  • Southern sites (Manta Alley, Cannibal Rock):

  • Recommended: Advanced Open Water, with previous experience in moderate current and surge.

We can organise check dives or refresher sessions at easy sites like Siaba before committing to any challenging dives.

Why Currents Matter So Much Here

Komodo currents are driven by significant tidal exchanges between two oceans through narrow straits. This can create:

  • Horizontal currents
  • Upcurrents and downcurrents
  • Eddies and turbulence around pinnacles and corners

At advanced sites in the north, we often:

  • Time dives carefully for the right tide phase
  • Enter up-current of the site and drift onto the structure
  • Stay in “current-shadow” areas behind pinnacles or ridges
  • Use surface marker buoys and clear procedures for separation

If the current is too strong or the group does not feel ready, we skip or modify the dive. No “must-do” site is worth an unsafe plan.

Private Charter Safety Advantages

On a private yacht or phinisi charter, you benefit from:

  • Smaller, known group: We learn your abilities across the first 1–2 dives and plan accordingly.
  • Flexible schedule: We can often choose tides and timing that minimise stress.
  • Dedicated tenders: Skiff pick-up and surface support tailored to the dive group.
  • Briefings & debriefs: We adjust the plan based on your feedback, not a fixed mass-tour schedule.

Still, Komodo is serious diving. I will always reserve the right, as dive guide and skipper, to change or cancel planned dives if conditions or diver readiness do not match the site.

Marine Life: Mantas, Sharks & Hammerheads — With Realistic Expectations

Komodo National Park is biologically rich. Across a typical charter including both central and northern areas, we often see:

  • Reef sharks (mostly smaller reef species)
  • Turtles on many reefs
  • Schooling fish, anthias clouds, jacks, snappers, fusiliers
  • Healthy coral gardens and walls
  • Macro life: nudibranchs, shrimps, crabs, the occasional rarer critter

Regarding the star attractions:

Manta Rays

  • Where: Central sites like Manta Point/Mawan; southern site Manta Alley.
  • Seasonality: Manta presence is seasonal and variable year to year. Certain months often see more activity, but there is no date range I can reliably guarantee.
  • Reality check:
  • Some trips see mantas on multiple dives.
  • Some trips see none, even with good planning.
  • We will position the itinerary for the best available odds at the time of your trip, but these are wild animals.

Hammerhead Sharks

Hammerheads are occasionally reported in wider eastern Indonesia, but:

  • Komodo is not a reliable, high-probability hammerhead destination.
  • Sightings in Komodo National Park are rare and highly unpredictable.
  • We never build or sell a Komodo charter as a “hammerhead trip”.

If hammerheads are your main goal, we can still discuss broader Indonesian options via Komodo Luxury’s network, but this specific page and offer are about Komodo itself.

Our Vessels: Private Phinisi & Yacht Charters

Charter Labuan Bajo arranges private charters on a range of vessels, from intimate boats to full luxury phinisi yachts. Within Komodo Luxury’s owned fleet, the flagship options are:

  • Komodo Signature – Luxury phinisi liveaboard, multiple cabins, indoor and outdoor lounges, dedicated dive deck and tenders.
  • Komodo Prestige – Luxury phinisi liveaboard in a similar category, designed for multi-day private charters with full onboard service.

You charter these vessels privately, meaning:

  • The boat is exclusively for your group.
  • We adjust the daily schedule to your pace — early-riser diving, more time for treks, or extra snorkelling time for non-divers.
  • Menus and service can be adapted to preferences and dietary needs (within operational limits).

Alongside these owned phinisi, we also work with selected Labuan Bajo boats in different size and budget bands. We will only propose vessels that are properly licensed for Komodo National Park and match your group size and expectations.

Park Entry Fees & Permits (Indicative)

Komodo National Park requires a combination of:

  • Park entry tickets
  • Conservation fees
  • Diving and/or snorkelling permits
  • Ranger fees for certain treks (for example, Komodo dragons on Komodo or Rinca)

These fees:

  • Are set by Indonesian authorities and can change with little notice
  • Often vary by nationality, activity (diving vs snorkelling vs trekking) and day of the week or holiday status
  • Are usually charged per person per day inside the park

As of last verified June 2026, many guests can expect overall park-related costs during a multi-day dive charter to fall into a moderate extra range per person, but exact amounts depend on your route, activities and regulations in force at the time.

We will provide current estimates with your quote, and our Labuan Bajo team will double-check actual rates again right before your departure. Always treat park fees as separate from the boat charter price.

Indicative Pricing: What a Komodo Dive Charter Costs

Every private charter is priced individually according to:

  • Vessel (luxury phinisi like Komodo Signature or Komodo Prestige vs smaller boats)
  • Season (high/peak vs shoulder/low)
  • Trip length (2D1N up to a week or more)
  • Group size and cabin configuration
  • Level of service (full-board, activities included, equipment rental, etc.)

As a rough guide (last verified June 2026):

  • Smaller private boats for short 2–3 day central Komodo routes usually start in the lower-to-mid per-night range for the entire boat, suitable for small groups or families.
  • Luxury phinisi charters such as Komodo Signature or Komodo Prestige for multi-day diving (3–6 nights) typically price in a higher per-night range for the full vessel, reflecting yacht standard, staffing and dive support.

We’ll convert these to a per-person guideline if you tell us your group size, but final offers are always by quote.

To get a tailored price, contact our team to plan your trip, or message WhatsApp +62 811-3823-875 and mention your dates, group size, preferred vessel level and how many days you’d like to dive.

How We Build Your Komodo Dive Charter Itinerary

Every group is different. Here’s how I usually plan a route around the best dive sites Komodo charter options can reach for you:

1. Understand Your Group

Before we suggest specific sites, we’ll ask:

  • How many certified divers and at what levels
  • Recent dive history and comfort with currents
  • Non-divers and snorkellers joining
  • Priorities: dragons, mantas, advanced northern sites, photography, more relaxed reefs, etc.
  • Travel dates and how flexible they are

2. Match Trip Length & Vessel

Once we know your priorities, we select:

  • A suitable vessel (from smaller private boats up to Komodo Signature / Komodo Prestige)
  • A realistic number of days to reach north and/or south safely, if requested
  • A rough daily rhythm: number of dives per day, land excursions, sunset treks

3. Draft a Site Plan (But Keep It Flexible)

We build a draft plan that might look like:

  • Day 1–2: Central Komodo (Siaba, Tatawa, Manta Point/Mawan) + dragon trek
  • Day 3–4: North Komodo (Batu Bolong, Castle Rock, Crystal Rock) if conditions and group level allow
  • Day 5+: Southern push (Manta Alley, Cannibal Rock) depending on season and forecast

This plan is then adjusted onboard based on:

  • Tide tables and daily current predictions
  • Actual sea state, wind and visibility
  • How the group looks in the water after the first couple of dives

4. Safety, Rest & Enjoyment

On longer charters we factor in:

  • Lighter dive days or optional dives if guests get tired
  • Opportunities for night dives at suitable, calmer sites
  • Non-diving highlights: Padar sunrise, Pink Beach, village visits (where appropriate), sandbar stops

The goal is not to tick every site in the park, but to give you a safe, rich and enjoyable Komodo experience tailored to your group.

FAQs: Komodo Charter Dive Sites

Which komodo charter dive sites can I reach on a 3-day trip?

On a typical 3 day / 2 night private charter from Labuan Bajo, you can comfortably cover central Komodo sites such as Siaba, Tatawa and Manta Point/Mawan, plus a Komodo dragon trek. If your group is experienced and conditions allow, we may add a more advanced central or northern dive, but full coverage of both north and south is unrealistic in only three days.

Are currents in Komodo too strong for beginner divers?

Not necessarily, but we must choose sites carefully. Some areas, especially in central Komodo like Siaba and calmer parts of Tatawa or Manta Point, can be suitable for Open Water divers with good guidance. However, advanced northern sites such as Batu Bolong, Castle Rock and Crystal Rock are not appropriate for beginners. On a private charter we can focus your dives on milder sites and gradually introduce simple drifts if you are ready.

What certification do I need to dive the best dive sites Komodo charter routes include?

For the headline advanced north sites (Batu Bolong, Castle Rock, Crystal Rock), Advanced Open Water (or equivalent) with solid drift experience is strongly recommended. For central sites and many southern reefs, Open Water plus some experience usually works, although Advanced remains a plus. We often run a check dive before taking any diver to current-exposed locations.

Can you guarantee manta or hammerhead sightings on my charter?

No. Manta and hammerhead sightings are seasonal and depend on many natural factors. We can design your itinerary to give you the best available chances based on recent observations, tides and season, but wildlife encounters in Komodo National Park are never guaranteed. Some trips see mantas multiple times; others may not see them at all.

How do I book a private Komodo dive charter with Charter Labuan Bajo?

Start by contacting us with your dates, group size, dive levels and preferred trip length. You can use our plan your trip page, message WhatsApp +62 811-3823-875 or email sales@komodoluxury.com. We’ll suggest suitable vessels from Komodo Luxury’s fleet and partner boats, propose route options and provide an indicative quote, then refine the plan with you before confirming your private charter.
